Iran for Women Travelers: Visas, Cities & Women-Only Experiences
A practical, woman-by-woman guide to traveling Iran β visas, dress code, the cities worth slowing down in, and the hidden female-only sanctuaries most tours never show you.
Traveling to Iran as a woman is one of the most rewarding, hospitable and β surprisingly to many first-timers β safe experiences you can have in the region. With a mandatory dress code to respect, a tourist visa to arrange and the right local operator at your side, the country opens up in a way that few destinations still can.
π Visas & entry
- Tour requirement. Most nationalities (including US, UK and Canadian passport holders) need to book a tour with a licensed agency to secure an entry permit. Many other passports can apply through the Iranian e-Visa system.
- Visa Grant Notice. You'll usually need an authorization code issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A registered local operator handles this for you.
- Validity. Tourist visas are typically valid for up to 30 days and can often be extended once you're inside the country.
πΈ Cities to slow down in
Shiraz β the city of poetry and gardens. Don't miss the kaleidoscopic stained glass of the Pink Mosque (Nasir al-Molk) at sunrise, and the ancient ruins of Persepolis an hour out of town.
Yazd β a magical desert city of mudbrick alleys, wind-catchers and Zoroastrian heritage. Walkable, wonderfully welcoming and a favourite for solo female travelers.
Isfahan β "Half the World". Stunning Islamic architecture, the immense Naqsh-e Jahan Square and bazaars you can lose an afternoon in.
Kashan β a manageable oasis town with restored Persian courtyard houses and easy access to the desert.
π A woman-by-woman perspective
Dress code. A loose headscarf (hijab) is mandatory for all women, including tourists. Pair it with a tunic, manteau or long cardigan that covers the hips, plus pants.
Women-only sanctuaries. Beyond the public-facing Iran, there's a vibrant world that opens only to women β beauty salons, local parks, the women-only carriages on trains and the metro. These are some of the warmest, funniest, most candid spaces you'll find anywhere.
Woman-by-woman tours. Female-led trips give you access to cooking classes with Iranian matriarchs, home visits, and conversations with local women at work β the kind of access mixed-gender groups rarely get.
π Practical tips before you go
- Carry enough cash. International cards still don't work; your operator can advise on the best way to bring money in.
- Download offline maps and a VPN before you arrive.
- Pack a couple of light, breathable manteaus β Iranian women dress with real flair, and so can you.
- Say yes to the tea. Always.
